Visit Nynäshamn

The Russian cannons

Visit the island's three Russian cannons, cast in solid steel.

There are three cannons positioned on the island from when the Russian warship Wsadnick ran aground off Gotska Sandön in 1864. The cannons are cast in solid iron so are incredibly heavy. Moving these cannons from the seabed up on to the island was therefore a major operation, one which was carried out by the island's lighthouse staff. Find out more about how they did in the island's nature room.
